It’s Autumn. That means back to school, back into the routine and prepare for the changing season! As the summer is winding down and autumn is approaching, we are going through a similar internal energy shift. The evenings are chillier and the days are shorter. With the weather change, the leaves start to fall from trees and you hear that first cough or sniffle.

10 Tips to keep you healthy during Winter
Increase water consumption
Wash your hands – throughout the day especially before eating and after you have been in a public place.
Supplements – Take Vit C, Zinc and Vit D supplements – both vital for your immune system.
Echinacea tincture – you can take this daily for 6 weeks
Wear warm clothes – Wearing a hat and a scarf helps protect you from the cold. Staying warm & maintaining our body temperature helps our bodies defend against invasion of wind cold or viruses because viruses thrive and replicate faster when our body temperature drops.
Homemade chicken soup – There is research that the tradition of eating chicken soup when you are ill does actually help you get better. It acts as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the movement of neutrophils – immune system cells that participate in the body’s inflammatory response. Second, it temporarily speeds up the movement of mucus, possibly helping relieve congestion and limiting the amount of time viruses are in contact with the nose lining.
Eat a good breakfast – Having a good breakfast can really help set you up for the day. Porridge is always a good way to start your day especially in Winter. It’s a great way of boosting your intake of starchy foods and fibre with a slow release energy. Plus oats are full of vitamins and minerals. You can sweeten with honey or a banana for an extra boost.
Manuka Honey – Manuka Honey is a natural healing agent with natural antiseptic and antibacterial qualities. A spoon of honey eaten each date directly off the spoon or winter warming with a hot cup of tea. A spoonful of Manuka Honey in your hot cup of tea can help ease the symptoms of winter colds and flus. The antibacterial action of Manuka Honey makes it a powerful natural remedy for easing the symptoms of sore throats and colds, and may even help ward them off in future.
Go outside – get regular exercise or just a walk. Regular exercise helps boost your immune system and give you a natural Vitamin D boost.
Eat a nutritious diet – Eat lots of fruit and vegetables, particularly brightly coloured ones. Leafy greens, red and orange peppers can provide a range of phytochemicals and antioxidants to strengthen the immune system. Beta carotene is also converted into
vitamin A, needed to maintain the microbe-retardant mucous passages of the respiratory tract. It is also important to eat lots of seasonal root vegetables during the colder months as eating food that is in season is fresher and tastes better. Fresher seasonal food tends to have higher nutritional value too! So apples, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, parsnips, carrots, beetroot…..this website is a great guide to seasonal eating http://www.bestinseason.ie/whats-in-season/
